Tips and Suggestions
Breastfeeding is a wonderful gift for you and your baby. Here are some helpful suggestions:
- Skin-to-skin contact is important for all babies and their parents. The CDC and World Health Organization recommend holding your baby skin-to-skin within the first hour to life. This practice has numerous health benefits, including helping initiate breastfeeding, maintaining infant body temperature, and helping the parent relax and feel calm.
- Hand expression of breast milk, without using a pump, is a helpful skill to practice after birth. Watch this video and see this handout for instructions.
- Good latch creates comfort for you and your baby. Watch this video for an example of a good latch. If latching is difficult or uncomfortable, ask us for help.
- More information including a video about breast massage for full breasts, engorgement, hand expression, and lumps.
The Three Golden Rules About Breastfeeding
- Babies feed eight or more times each day
- Babies have gold, mustard-like bowel movements by 5-7 days old
- Parents become comfortable with breastfeeding
Breast Pumps
Many insurance plans, including New Hampshire Medicaid, offer free breast pumps. Contact your insurance company or ask us for assistance.
